Professor Bowler is a historian of biology with extensive work on the history of evolutionism and related areas including science and religion, popular science, and the emergence of the idea of progress. He has published several papers and books over a 40-year period and was president of the British Society for the History of Science from 2004–2006.His current research focuses on popular literature on evolutionism from the pre-Darwinian period to the present. at the University of Belfast
